SPEECH PARTY TIP | parallel talk
🗣 Parallel talk happens when you describe the actions of the child while they are playing (or doing anything really!) It might seem strange or sound silly because you will be talking without expecting to carry on a conversation, but it’s important and helpful to add language onto your child’s actions so they can learn the meanings of those words and eventually begin to use them. Also, if you have a kiddo who is already talking, this can still be a helpful strategy to use for new experiences and to introduce new words! 🎉
EXAMPLES:
“You are building a tower. Wow your tower is tall!”
“You are so happy; I can see you smiling.”
“You are pushing the car very fast!”
”You are eating your green beans with your fork. You must be really hungry!”
“You are at the beach. Your toes are in the sand, and you can hear the waves!”
Parallel talk can happen at home, on the playground, at the grocery store, or anywhere else you are engaging with your child. I encourage you to take time everyday, no matter where you are, to interact with your little ones using #paralleltalk 🧡
